  • 007 How To Remain Grounded

    29/05/2017 Duración: 15min

Show Notes: I live in a place with mixed weather. Wintery winters, summery summers. Winters can be pretty harsh.  I ran an informal experiment: In the dead of winter I've asked random people what they think about summer. A common reply: "I don't think we'll have a summer!" My followup question: "So you think it will snow in July?! You wouldn't believe how many people reply, "Yes! I'm beginning to believe it will snow in July." Then comes my coup de grace: "Now, hold on a second! Has that every happened before? Has it ever snowed here in July?" And that's when their eyes are reopened to reality. We really WILL have a summer!  You see, sometimes life gets so tough that people have difficulty separating fiction from reality.  That is often the case when people get sick. Sometimes the clouds of illness are so thick that there seems to be no hope. No chance. No possibility of getting through this one. Life seems to suck and that's the end of the story.  But no! Don't go ther

  • 006 Interview with Jim Marcus

    29/05/2017 Duración: 17min

In this episode I interview James Marcus, a Certified Financial Planner, entrepreneur, avid golfer and all-around great guy. I ran into Jim at a busy gas station- I hadn't seen him in a few years- and, while our reunion was brief, he still managed to tell me about what was going on in his life. I immediately invited him onto the show.  It was a beautiful Friday morning in mid October 2015. Jim had a great weekend planned. He was going to play golf, then fly to a tennis fantasy camp in Texas. Talk about an exciting life! Jim moved around the bedroom and, per his routine, he leaned down to kiss the sleeping Zeus, their beloved family dog. Zeus startled when he woke and bit off Jim's nose. "He bit my nose off!" It was a scene of chaos. Blood, paramedics, pain. Jim's life was immediately changed. His son found the severed nose and convinced the medics to bring it along to the hospital.  He was admitted for immediate reconstructive surgery, then observed for the next eleven days while they waited to see

  • 005 Its Easy To Be Nice

    22/05/2017 Duración: 12min

How much effort does it take to be nice? Here is an experience that I had with my grandfather when he first got sick. It was an unfortunate situation: newly diagnosed with bladder cancer, too old for surgery or chemo (he had emphysema although he had never smoked.)  At the time of this story he had just been diagnosed and was newly admitted. He was still positive, talkative.  While we were talking a young man walked into the room to empty the trash. Zaidy- as we called him- interrupted our conversation, looked over at the worker, and asked him his name. At first the guy was taken aback. He had that look of "what have I done wrong?" But Zaidy asked him again, "What's your name?" "John," he meekly replied. "Well, John, thank you very much," Zaidy told him and John's face instantly brightened. He finished with the trash, bid Zaidy farewell, and with a "Have a good day," was gone.  Then Zaidy looked at me. "How difficult was that?" Zaidy asked. "How difficult is it to be nice?" A story that has nev

  • 004 Personal or Professional

    15/05/2017 Duración: 12min

When I first started in homecare I oriented under a nurse who had been in the business since before I was born. A true veteran. Old school. She taught me all about homecare and showed me the "ropes." A couple things she instructe:  know where all the bathrooms are in the city so we don't use our patients' bathrooms do not accept offers of food or drink in patient homes Her reasoning for the above was: it is not professional Fine. No problem. I took note. I readied my tools, checked the engine light and prepared to set out on my own.  First day: I knock on the door. A lady opens just as I realize that I've miscalculated the bathroom situation!  "Hi! I'm Dov! May I use your bathroom?" "But of course!" "Dont forget to flush!"  A bit later I joined my patient in the living room and made myself comfortable. "Hey Dov, do you want a drink of water? Maybe a can of Coke?" "Well," I began, then hesitated. I wondered if it would be unprofessional if I accept her genuine hospitality. "Ok," I s

  • Healthcare Raw 003 My Journey in Healing

    10/05/2017 Duración: 24min

http://healthcareraw.com The First Truly Patient Centered Podcast with Rabbi Dov Marcus RN Music: http://www.purple-planet.com In this episode I share my "heroes journey."  We all come from somewhere, we've all been on a journey which got us to this point. Do you consider your journey to be unique? This story takes place after I'm already a nurse. It starts on a busy acute care unit- I was working in pulmonary transplant- and one day ran into a crying lady in the hallway. What she told me stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking... Not long after that, I was caring for a patient's gaping wound on the same hospital unit and suddenly stopped to "calibrate my senses." Amazingly, it seemed like my dear patient took the same pause- we looked around, listening to all the craziness on the unit... It seemed like healthcare pays too much attention to the process and too little attention to the purpose. Then I moved to homecare.  Homecare is unique, in that practitioners enter the homes of our patient

  • 001 Healthcare Raw Podcast

    07/05/2017 Duración: 11min

http://healthcareraw.com In this first episode of the Healthcare Raw Podcast I introduce myself and describe the inspiration for this show.  Healthcare Raw was borne from a true desire to connect with real patients, as a real person. This may seem difficult, especially nowadays, when the American healthcare environment is under so much pressure.  On a daily basis I meet real healthcare patient, all with some different kind of affliction, most of whom tell me that they are looking for something in addition to treatment of their respective illnesses.  But what can that be? Simple. People want to feel normal. They want to connect with their providers, they want to relate to them, they want to feel that, although suffering from this malady, they are still regarded with respect and dignity.  Healthcare systems are under a lot of pressure. They are looking for new and special ways to make people better, quicker, more efficiently. Many understand the importance of meaning and

  • 002 People Who Lack Empathy

    07/05/2017 Duración: 12min

Sympathy versus Empathy Sympathy is when you feel bad for someone; empthy is when you climb into their skin and feel what they are feeling... Once upon a time I was having a difficulty time with something in my life. It doesn't remember what was going on, it could have been anything. Regardless, I turned to a friend of mine- someone who I thought would be there for me in a time of need. I told him about my problem and was astounded with his response: "Everyone has problems. You need to figure it out on your own." I couldn't believe it! I felt all alone and discarded! I wanted to grab him by the collar and shout, "I NEED YOUR HELP!" Working in healthcare puts me in contact with people who are experiencing problems. Health problems. Psychosocial problems. Emotional issues. You name it. On a daily basis people turn to me in their distress and look for support. Now imagine if someone turns to me in a particularly difficult situation and I respond just like my friend: "Everyone has problems. You need to figure it
