Meet The Locals Podast #24: Sabeel Chohan
11/01/2016 Duración: 01h03minHappy New Year from the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast! We took a week off last week, but we're back with a solid mix techno mix from local DJ Sabeel Chohan: "When I think of underground electronic music, it goes down to the basics. A simple beat with a clash of edgy unique sounds. Dark is what describes my style. Techno and Minimal caters to just that. When selecting the songs, I am looking strictly for a down, darker sound with more robust beats. These songs have a distinctive heavy bass line that flow into a haunting drum beat rhythm. This mix is a raw blend of melodies ranging from 120-124 BPM which makes the blood pulse. Some of these talented artists include works from Jewel Kid, Sam Paganini, and Adam Bayer which ultimately leaves you craving for more." You can catch Sabeel next at Hair O' The Dog 2016 in Philadelphia. Meet The Locals Podcast #23: DFMO
28/12/2015 Duración: 55minWe close out 2015 with a great podcast from DC native DFMO, who you can catch playing For the Love of Deep House and Debauchery at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club on New Year's Eve. In his own words: "This exclusive NYE mix for DC House Grooves has a blend of some of my favorite deep, tech and house tracks from 2015. (I thought it would be a great way to wrap up the year.) A key focus of my session is ensuring the mix has an organic feel. The playlist is unplanned and evolves during the set, which is a live recording with no post-production. Grooving to an unknown destination is a trip that can lead to some fun surprises. There are no retakes on the dance floor, so I approach each session on the decks in the same way. The dance floor and music become a rich feedback loop. The tracks I find myself selecting usually tend to contain at least one element that feels organic- that could be a smooth vocal track, some acoustic element or a live/sampled instrumental. I love when common themes, intentional or ot

Meet The Locals Podcast #20: Throe
10/11/2015 Duración: 01h12minWe've been fortunate enough to get receive some amazing mixes lately, but this one really stood out from the crowd. While this podcast series is intended to showcase mixes from Washington DC based DJs whatever their style, our personal tastes lean towards mixes on the more underground end of the spectrum which take you on a journey through the rich variety house music has to offer, while still maintaining a solid dance floor vibe. This mix from Throe hits all the right buttons, starting off with some real deep house, building the vibe as it heads into techno territory towards the end. More like this please! In his own words: "I wanted this mix to properly reflect what I listen to on a regular basis; thus, it features songs across a very broad range of sound. There’s definitely more restraint and a narrower scope involved when playing out vs. messing around at home, and so I took this mix as an opportunity to bridge together disparate tracks that I normally wouldn’t have the chance to. In it you’ll hear songs

Meet The Locals Podcast #19: Ragab
04/11/2015 Duración: 01h03minEpisode #19 of the Meet the Locals podcast is very enjoyable mix from DC local Ragab. This is one for the dreamers, an hour of laid back dreamy deep vibes, providing a great build up to get you in the mood to dance. In Ragab's own words: "I mixed this for the fall season, I’ve always found dreamy & emotive music to be a great soundtrack for that season. so i tried to keep that feel/sound going through out the set. The 1st part of the set has a lot of middle eastern sounds to it & starts out slow & a bit Melancholic. The energy slowly builds up as the set goes on and starts getting more groovy but still maintaining that dreamy feel to it." You can catch Ragab next at the Hearts Decompression event in NYC on November 14, and at various clubs and parties in and around DC. Meet The Locals Podcast #17: Heather Femia
30/09/2015 Duración: 01h44minWe're back with the seventeenth edition of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, the time around featuring a great mix from Heather Femia, recorded live on the patio at Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington DC on September 13, 2015. Heather is one of the hardest working DJs in town, and we're happy to welcome her to the podcast. Over to Heather for a few words about the mix: "It is always a pleasure to play at Eighteenth Street Lounge, the crowd is really into the music. I was a touch nervous on this one, leading into Sarah Myers and Tara Brooks I felt the mix needed to be more tech than the housey thing I'm more known for. It really gave me a chance to be a bit arty in the early part of the set. Admittedly, it all went happy and housey at the end, but I think Sarah cut me some slack and transitioned into her set flawlessly anyway. " You can catch Heather this Saturday at U Street Music Hall in Washington DC opening for Tensake: https://www.facebook.com/events/108422962838129/ Heather Femia on

Meet The Locals Podcast #16: zacheser
08/09/2015 Duración: 01h03minFor the latest episode of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, we've got a great one hour house music journey from local zacheser, recently heard opening for Hotel Garuda at Flash for the Nü Androids crew. Over to zacheser for a few words about the mix: " I take pride in being the fat, weird, nerdy guy in the corner. It's been my aesthetic since I was in grade school: while the other kids were stoked about 'Toy Story,' I was pumped about 'Star Wars' or the horror section at Blockbuster; I chose Beth Ditto over Beyoncé because she was a fat kid like me who made music and gave zero fucks about what people thought of her; I wanted concert tickets instead of a car when I graduated college. DJ'ing wasn't something I experimented in until after I saw LCD Soundsystem in 2010. That was my first experience of the power, or rather the catharsis, that dance music could have. LCD Soundsystem was unique in the sense that it was electronic music for the outsiders - the kids that wanted something pure and honest

It was such a spectacular night, I can definitely say it was one of my most favorite gigs that I've ever played. Super small club, great vibe, stellar sound - can't wait to go back" You can catch Sarah at the following gigs in August and September: 8/29 - Flash with Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves https://www.facebook.com/events/404938153048761/ 8/30 - DC Brau party at the Cambria Rooftop 9/4 - Verboten NYC w/ Ida En

Meet The Locals Podcast #14: HOT COFFEE
04/08/2015 Duración: 01h44minWe're back with another edition of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast! For episode 14, we've got a great mix from Stick Fingers Collective members HOT COFFEE. Over to James from HOT COFFEE for a few words about the mix: " This mix features the musical selection / mixing of 1/2 of HOT COFFEE ( James ). Being our second mix for this new project, I wanted to introduce the listener to some of my favorite jams that really set a natural percussive mood which is a staple of all our HOT COFFEE sets. Originally we had planned out a mix for this, but didn’t feel the vibe. Placing myself into a more explorative mindset and pressing record, led to a mix that takes you on a journey from a mid tempo acid jazz groove to swinging funky house and beyond. I hope you enjoy listening as much as i did making it, dancing, sweating, and grooving all over our half finished Sticky Fingers Collective studio, this mix helped reaffirm my love of DJ'ing and motivate us to take things further! Thanks to DC House Grooves fo

Meet The Locals Podcast #13: Philco
20/07/2015 Duración: 59minIt's been a while since the last edition of the Meet The Locals Podcast series, but we're back with a great new mix from a name that will be familiar to any regulars on the DC dance music scene, PHILCO: "My mix for DC House Grooves has a couple different feels to it. First off, I really tried to be current with the mix. Most of the tracks have come out in the past 2 or 3 months -- just recent releases that I've really been feeling. A couple older tracks in there as well. There's some big hitters included like Hot Since 82 and Danny Daze, even a Kevin Saunderson edit, but also some stuff from emerging artists and tracks that I really like that haven't got a lot of coverage. Overall, I picked tracks that I thought would make things interesting and keep people moving throughout the mix. Second, most of my gigs are opening sets or in venues with a fairly diverse crowd, so I often have to play a bit more accessible to get people going and keep a good vibe in the room. I enjoy playing a lot of sub genres under t

While at fusion factory and playing with legend Chris Fortier, I released his assault on the unsuspecting ravers at Fusion Factory on Feb 7th, 2015. A fusion of element and sound blending house, minimal and techno together, the dancefloor was rocking for over two hours. Tracks from reputed labels as Bedrock, Selador, Fade, Auricle, Dirtybird and more kept the dancefloor hungry. They were graced by such artists as Luke Mandala, Justin Martin, Dave Seaman, myself and Darius Twin. Their thirst for quality beats sated they were ready for the next offering." Meet The Locals Podcast #8: Doktor D
11/02/2015 Duración: 01h32minThe latest edition of the Meet the Locals podcast comes from a relative newcomer to the DC underground house music scene. Originally hailing from Scotland, Doktor D can be found spinning regularly at various venues in DC. Over to Doktor D for more info about the mix: "For my DC House Grooves mix I really tried to pay homage to the ethos of House music in Washington, DC; but with a twist that reflects more of me as a DJ. This meant working with deeper shades of House music which retain the funkier DC associated with the nation’s capital. I also wanted to showcase some European tracks which share a similar ethos but often very different routes and influences. Being from the UK, I especially wanted to showcase some up and coming British talent. So look out for tracks by Fort Romeau and Auntie Flo as well as an innovative remix of Marc Poppcke’s “Inner Conflict” by Last Day on Earth’s Thermal Bear. In terms of adding a personal touch, I made a concerted effort to occasionally shift the onus of the mix to a more
