  • Meet the Locals Podcast #65: Nick Garcia

    07/02/2018 Duración: 01h02min

Can't believe we've reached episode 65 of the Meet the Locals podcast! This episode features a blissful journey through big, classic 90s house from Nick Garcia, resident of new party Werk Ethic, which celebrates the very best of 90s house and techno. This mix is really talking our language! Some stone cold classics right here. "First of all, this mix was extremely fun to record.  Playing these older records feels a certain way, different than playing brand new records.  It’s like you can feel the history in them.  You imagine all the people that have had amazing moments dancing to them over the span of 10, 15, 20 years.  That’s why I love Werk Ethic, the party that Ken Lazee and I do with U Street Music Hall.  At once it’s a tribute, a history lesson, and a proper party.  I tried to capture the feeling I bring to Werk Ethic in this mix and selected my favorite records from 90’s house and garage.  I included some better known tracks like Frankie Knuckles’ timeless remix of “The Pressure” and Masters at Work’

    10/01/2018 Duración: 01h05min

Happy to be back with episode #64 of the Meet the Locals podcast from local vinyl slinger Kenny M. We've been seeing Kenny's name cropping up on flyers around DC for a while now, so it's great to finally hear a mix from him! Quality deep, funky groovers. Real house music! "This is an all-vinyl mix of some deep and funky house tunes, old and new, that I've acquired over the past few months." • Meet the Locals Podcast #62: Eli Cash

    29/11/2017 Duración: 01h07min

Can't believe we're up to episode 62 of the Meet the Locals podcast, but here we are. This quality one hour journey through the underground comes to us courtesy of a recent arrival in DC's dance music community, co-owner of Weelhouse records, DJ Eli Cash. DJ's take note: this is the type of mix we love here at DC House Grooves! "The mix kind of plays like a mixtape because the style switches up a bit throughout, sometimes more abruptly than others. I don't really care about maintaining the illusion of a perfect set, and I kind of like for my sets to sound like a collage. I dig from a loose web of rougher house music, ranging from L.I.E.S. stuff to unreleased tracks by my online friends who I'll probably never meet IRL. The internet is wild. I do honestly find most of this music on Soundcloud in one way or another, which is where I seem to have the best luck finding fresh material. One last note: The first track is from UD Alta's latest @Weelhous release, a label I co-run with my friend Huestro. Enjoy!" Keep

  • Meet the Locals Podcast #61: Nathan Gorey

    14/11/2017 Duración: 01h05min

Episode 61 features a quality hour long session from Baltimore's Nathan Gorey: "For this mix I wanted to start us off with a deep, percussive, near-the-equator sort of vibe and build up the energy from there. I brought tracks that all have elements I love—eclectic percussion, bass lines with a lot of swing and movement, and sounds that make you imagine you're dancing deep in the jungle or in the desert as the sun's going down. There are a few lighter sections sprinkled throughout with some lighter vocal lines to latch onto as the tempo builds. The November installment of Obsidian's Housework party is November 18. Every month our collective Obsidian throws an all-night, two room party that is all underground house, techno, and tech house in the main room, and things like downtempo, liquid DnB, and chiller house in the back room. November's Housework is also the after party for Re:Imagine's Throwback 3 party at Bambou earlier that night. If you're in the Baltimore area, come party with us! We go until 5 am ever

  • Meet the Locals Podcast #60: Katrina Mir

    08/11/2017 Duración: 59min

This edition of the Meet the Locals Podcast features none other than DC House Grooves very own Katrina Mir, delivering a solid one hour mix of big vocal disco & house grooves. "I played recently at the legendary annual Halloween party at Jimmy Valentine's Lonely Hearts Club here in Washington DC, and I went big with the vocal numbers. Sadly, my set wasn't recorded on the night, so I went ahead and re-recorded it. Hope you enjoy!" You can catch Katrina Mir at part 2 of Playlist's second birthday celebrations at Eighteenth Street Lounge on Thursday November 9 (https://www.facebook.com/events/433676937049061/), and on Friday November 10 spinning at the Solar Beats stage at Catharsis on the Mall at 10.30pm (https://www.facebook.com/events/433676937049061/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KatrinaMirDJ/ SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/katrinamir

  • Meet the Locals Podcast #58: Pacific Fur Company

    06/09/2017 Duración: 02h21min

We've been looking forward to this one for a while now: Episode #58 of the Meet the Locals Podcast by one half of enigmatic duo Pacific Fur Company features over two hours of quality sounds from across the electronic music spectrum. DJs take note: this is what we want to hear at DC House Grooves! Proper musical journeys lasting more than 60 minutes, taking us places we don't expect while keeping that vibe strong. Over to the man himself for a few words about the mix: "I wanted to bring in a variety of textures and styles - there’s some ambient, acid, breakbeat, house, electro, vocal, and so on. I’m actually not so great about keeping one style on the sound system in general. It’s always seemed strange when there is an expectation of what you are supposed to be playing out, and if you don’t meet that expectation then the music you play isn’t worth consideration or participation. That model seems to be based purely on club economics, and it makes the music a pretty boring piece of the picture. Diversity in th

Episode #51 of the Meet the Locals Podcast sees the triumphant return of Steve Kirn with 77 minutes of quality underground, slow BPM techno. Just the way we like it! Since I do the vinyl and digital art work for the techno labels Hidden Recordings and Brood Audio I only found it fit to play a few tracks from those labels (a couple unreleased but set for a month or 2). This mix is meant to have a dark warehouse feel to it but I enjoy playing slower BPM techno. • Meet the Locals Podcast #50: Adrian Collazo

    24/05/2017 Duración: 01h07min

For the 50th (!) edition of the DC House Grooves Meet the Locals Podcast, we've got something really special: a celebration of pure disco joy from Eighteenth Street Lounge resident Adrian Collazo: "I decided to record a mix with disco and boogie tracks that are near and dear to my heart. I grew up with a lot of these songs and remember recording late night mixes on WKTU (Disco 92) in Brooklyn. The next day I’d bring out my boombox and sit on my stoop with other neighborhood kids to hang out and listen to my tapes. I started the mix with a common WKTU station ID and boy, it brings back memories. People sometimes ask me why I love DJing and it’s really quite simple - I love being a disco/boogie/funk ambassador as well as sharing my love for house and other music that derives from the disco era. Enjoy. You can catch me in the Jazz Room at ESL or at various underground spots in the District including Jimmy Valentine’s, Dr. Clock’s and Looking Glass Lounge - serving up a mix of disco, boogie, funk, and deep house
