James Howard Meredith, American civil rights activist, writer, political adviser, and Air Force veteran, inspired by President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, was the first African-American student admitted to the former racially segregated University of Mississippi. Hailing from Ackerman in Choctaw County, Raymond Edwin Mabus, Jr.’s father would close his hardware Store once a year and the family would travel abroad to collect art, textiles, and historic memorabilia.
