Fandomania: Geek Music

In this, the final, episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk about the reasons behind the (probably somewhat surprising!) end of the podcast. It's short, as you might expect given my general lack of loquaciousness, so just give it a listen to find out why I'm stopping the podcast. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Kyle Stevens from Kirby Krackle. It's hard to believe he was last on way back in 2015 for episode 8! Kirby Krackle's latest release is Suburban Hearts / Vigilante Hymns. It's a decidedly different direction, more mellow and stripped down (it's just Kyle and the guitar / ukulele), less specifically geeky, but it's not nearly as surprising as it might seem given several tracks from the last few albums. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Jace McLain. This time, he's on to talk about his record label, Needlejuice Records. Currently they are running a Kickstarter to rerelease Logan Whitehurst's opus, Goodbye, My 4-Track, on cassette, CD, and vinyl. We also talk about other releases from the label. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Sarah Donner. Her latest release is Broadway Nerds Sing Broadway which features many guests that have also appeared on this podcast. She's also one half of the band Kittens Slay Dragons, a more electronic group that allows her to explore some different musical territory. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to Mayor Wertz. His latest release is Try Harder, which is also his first full album as Mayor Wertz. It maintains his expected sense of humor, but it also feels more personal, something he talked about on his last appearance as well. It's a noticeable step up in terms of production and "sophistication," although you can still expect their usual experimental pop and sorta oddball sense of humor as well. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk yet again to Mikal kHill (technically his fifth appearance, but one was a "team-up" with cecilnick). His latest release is the beachy keen EP which consists of surf rock versions of five of his tracks. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk again to MC Breath. His latest release is Creepshots, which features more story telling songs than his previous releases, but keeps his odd sense of humor and use of dialogue samples from the 70s and 80s. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Gray Rinehart. His most recent release, Distorted Vision, is actually from a few years ago, but he has a few new songs that you can hear when he performs live. We also talk about his writing, including his Hugo nominated story, "Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust, Earth to Alluvium," which unfortunately got caught up in the whole Sad Puppies / Rabid Puppies controversy (although Gray himself mostly stayed out of it. In this episode of the Fandomania: Geek Music podcast, I talk to Paul Melancon. He's currently running a Kickstarter with the help of Angela Webber of the Doubleclicks. It's for a concept album about a cartoon band called The Get-Gos. The album, The Get-Gos Action Hour!, is a tour "from depression to destruction to a very strange sort of redemption. All this through the kaleidoscope of Hanna-Barbera, Amazonian shaman, and hamburgers." He's also been making music for over 20 years now, so we get into some of his history, including a hiatus he took that lead to the making of this album. I included a couple of tracks from his most recent release, Yet Another B​-​Side Collection, which was actually released the day we recorded! We are, however, working on getting me back on at some point.
