Some of the earliest known art—cave paintings from roughly 65,000 years ago—depict animals and subsequently infer our relationship to them. Artists throughout time have often turned to pets, livestock, service animals, and wild beasts as models, finding inspiration in both their familiarity and alien nature. These creatures offer anatomical studies of tails, wings, trunks, horns, and fur. They give us a view into the worlds uninhabited by humanity. Consideration of the artist's viewpoint will be critical in the presentation these works, particularly in highlighting the different ways male and female artists portray their subjects and their actions. Domestic work is featured in many of these images, presented in manners from celebratory to fetishistic. The depiction of the female body, particularly in regards to modelling and sex work, will also be explored.

She was a dedicated leader at the Art Center as an active member of the Acquisitions Committee and the Board of Directors. In addition to her invaluable gift of guidance and time, she bequeathed the Art Center her collection of more than 200 works of art by women artists.

This marks the first time the painting has been publicly exhibited in Iowa. Also on view are early Impressionist paintings of the Iowa landscape by Wood produced in the early 1920s.

A little more than a century ago, a group of European artists banded together and formed Dada, an art movement that responded to the trauma of World War I and challenged the concept of fine art. Dada's irrational tactics later paved the way in the 1920s for Surrealism, a movement that encouraged participating artists to look to the subconscious for inspiration. The Irrational and the Marvelous celebrates both Dada and Surrealism, featuring the work of Dada icons Marcel Duchamp and Hannah Höch, and surreal explorations by Roberto Matta and Dorothea Tanning, among others.
