Retroactive

After a long, six-month hiatus, WE RETURN. Despite our absence, we jump straight into the current landscape of movie remakes, including Ghost in the Shell, The Lion King, and Power Rangers.  We'll get back into the swing of things soon, so stay tuned for more Retro Active in the near future!

This week, we update you guys about the Jumanji remake (hrrrhkk) and--HOLY SHIT HOLD THE PHONE. Disney is doing the unthinkable and fast-tracking a (presumably) live-action Lion King remake. We are not going to take this lying down. Listen in as Joey gets upset about this! (and Will too, kinda)

With the passing of Jack Riley, the voice of Rugrats' Stu Pickles, we look back at his best episodes, as well as name some of the other great Nicktoons dads. It's a dadstravaganza!

Science fiction has long been a genre full of color, whimsy, and the idea that ANYTHING can be possible. So why has recent sci-fi pop culture been so caught up on the reality of it all? Thanks to No Man's Sky, we are reminded of why we love space travel, and in this episode, talk about why and how the genre is changing.

We're back this week with another edition of Wretched Reboots! This week we discuss the aftermath of the new Ghostbusters release, and also give our two cents on the new Power Rangers movie. Does it look wretched or reasonable? Listen in to find out!

Here at RetroActive, we love games. We love old games, especially, which is why Will has decided to dedicate this episode to his love for retro collecting. After going through some traumatic experiences with selling off much of his collection, Will considers the pros and cons of this time-consuming (and extremely costly!) hobby. Is the trend towards a completely digital games library hurting the market? Are collector's editions of games the last bastion of physical copies? Do WE have any awesome games in our own collection? This week, we take a look at the trainwreck that is Mighty No. 9, and how the game's crowd-sourcing development doomed the project from the start. Will thinks real long and hard about what EXACTLY makes a Mega Man game a Mega Man game, as Joey looks on the brighter side of Kickstarted video game projects.

Happy 20th anniversary to us! Yes, that's right folks. In celebration of RetroActive's 20th episode, we're now referring to ourselves from a first-person perspective Joey returns from the magical land of Los Angeles to tell Will the harrowing tale that is his E3 experience. We discuss the nature of present day E3, ponder how the convention might change within the next decade (VR show tickets, anyone?), and gush over just how good the new Zelda game looks.  Also mentioned: Indie games galore, Will likes JRPGs, and Resident Evil 7's logo designer is a fucking genius.

With Joey going to E3, the guys decide to bust out some old gaming magazines and see how the biggest gaming convention in the world was covered back in the day.  Stay tuned next week to hear our follow-up podcast, as we detail what ACTUALLY goes on at E3 nowadays. 

Movies based on video games have had a long history of being absolutely terrible. Is there anything anyone can do about it? Or is the industry doomed to make the same mistakes over and over again? Will and Joey get to the bottom of the issue, and give their incredibly important opinions on how to fix their most beloved genre of movies.

This week brings a brand spanking new game to the forefront of the FPS genre: Blizzard's own Overwatch! But how much has the genre evolved over the past 20+ years? Will and Joey discuss its humble beginnings with Faceball 2000 and Doom, and how online multiplayer changed everything. 

On this very special BONUS episode of RetroActive, Will and Joey get real. Joey recounts his recent trip to Colorado, while Will, once again, entertains us all with his story of misery and mayhem while in Taiwan.

Here at RetroActive, reminiscing about our childhood is what we're all about, but of course, nothing is ever perfect. Will and Joey decide to take a trip down memory lane for the purpose of DESTROYING some of the movies they feel just did not age well at all. From primitive CGI to "what-the-fuck-we're-they-thinking?" storylines, nothing is sacred in this episode. 

The reveal of Nintendo's new system, the "NX," marks the beginning of the end for the Wii U. With virtually no games left for the remainder for 2016, it's curtains for the system that had a pretty strange--if slightly successful--life. For the eulogy, Will and Joey reminisce with their favorite Super Nintendo games of all time, and hope for a time where Nintendo remembers how important 3rd party games are to the console.

With National Alien Day upon us, Will and Joey decide toexchange words about the scariest movie monsters they can think of.Does the Xenomorph take the cake as the most terrifying of alltime? Or does something ELSE claim the top spot? 

When it seems like Hollywood is destined to do nothing more than remake every franchise from the 90s, Will and Joey are here to defend their childhood. On this episode of RetroActive, the two take on a couple of reboots that are sure to offend: Jumanji and Ghost in the Shell. Do the circumstances around the films deem it wretched, or perhaps... reasonable?
