Joel Sartore is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher and a 20-year contributor to National Geographic magazine. His hallmarks are a sense of humor and a Midwestern work ethic. Joe’s assignments have taken him to every continent and to the world’s most beautiful and challenging environments, from the High Arctic to the Antarctic. Simply put, Joel is on a mission to document endangered species and landscapes in order to show a world worth saving. His interest in nature started in childhood, when he learned about the very last passenger pigeon from one of his mother’s Time-Life books. He has since been chased by a wide variety of species including wolves, grizzlies, musk oxen, lions, elephants and polar bears. His first National Geographic assignment introduced him to nature photography, and also allowed him to see human impact on the environment first-hand. Dawn Bowery is a British photographer residing in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. She has always had a passion for photography, preferring to document life visually rather than through the written word. Through her travels she developed a love for street photography in far away places like China, Cuba and Morocco where she took an intensive photography course with Creative Escapes. This allowed her the opportunity to develop her skills and gave her the confidence to take her photography to the next level. She was rewarded by having one of her fine art prints from Morocco exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in their Summer Exhibition 2009 and went on to have several exhibitions in London selling fine art prints to collectors around the world.  Before becoming a professional photographer Dawn enjoyed a long and successful career as a visual effects artist for film and television working for Rhythm and Hues Studios in Los Angeles and more recently for Sky TV in London. New York artist Xiomáro (SEE-oh-MAH-ro) breathes life into iconic American figures and historical events to make them relevant in the 21st century.  After recovering from cancer, he transitioned from a varied career as a musician, entertainment industry attorney and artist manager into the field of art photography.  Inspired by the example of photographers like Eadweard Muybridge, Carleton Watkins and Ansel Adams, he seeks to create artistic images that also promote the appreciation, conservation and visitation of America’s parks and historical sites. Mark Hemmings is a professional photographer and commercial filmmaker. He is Director of Photography at Hemmings House Pictures, an international media company that specializes in TV production, documentaries, commercial films, advertising/architectural photography and audio recording. Mark got his start in the photography and movie industry when he lived in Japan in 2000. He signed a contract with a photography agency in Tokyo which lead to a career traveling around the world capturing images for magazines, travel guidebooks, and commercial clients. These travels have given Mark a great love for street photography, and meeting new people from different cultures. Mark is also a professional photography instructor, and he has taught photography workshops around the world: Japan, Korea, England, Hungary, Transylvania/Romania, and Mexico. Sam Abell has been a photographer for over 40 years and has been largely known for his work with National Geographic. His career has revolved largely through his many long-term projects for magazines and books. He is also an author, artist and teacher.  He has published several books including The Photographic Life, Seeing Gardens and The Life of a Photograph which provide wonderful collections of his body of work.  Sam's ability to compose layered compositions have helped him to create images that are considered some of the best photographs ever made. Celebrated photographer Matthew Jordan Smith has worked with some of the top names in entertainment today including Haile Berry, Jennifer Connelly, Jamie Fox, Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey.  Matthew’s love of photography and people stretches far beyond his commissioned work and has given birth to several personal projects including two books. Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. In 1948 he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research. Erwitt traveled in France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France. While in New York, Erwitt met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker, the former head of the Farm Security Administration.  ​Kevin McCollister is a Los Angeles based photographer who has been sharing images on his blog East of West LA since 2006. In his blog and his book by the same title, he explores parts of the city of Angeles not frequently explored in film and television. His photographs of Los Angeles, reveal the mash-up up the past and the present with images that often reflect how buildings and spaces have been continually adapted with each generation of Angelenos, particularly immigrants. His night photographs reveal a Los Angeles which seems virtually abandoned upon nightfall, but which still reveal glimpses of the people and the communities that work and exist there during daylight hours. James Carbone’s life is a study of cultures that’s expressed through his passion for photography. Carbone was born in Los Angeles, Calif. From an early age Carbone read through the books of great photographers: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Mary Ellen Mark. “Seeing all those great images started my obsession with photography,” Carbone says. For the past ten years Carbone has studied under Mary Ellen Mark, a world-renown documentary photographer. The two started working together at Rockport College in Maine and have continued at Pacific Center Northwest in Seattle and El Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo Center in Oaxaca, Mexico.
