Summer is over and Fall is here! The regular gang gathers to discuss gang names, idols, witches, food in the form of baskets and otherwise, all in the context of anime! First Kestrel and DJ have some thoughts about the finished summer season before we contemplate how Funimation got all the good shows this fall, for once. Whether that holds true for the entire season remains to be seen. Plus some truly unusual news and recommendations! 

The usual crew returns as fall moves in and summer moves out. We have a ton of news to delve into from the latest online conventions, various mergers, acquisitions, licenses rescues and more! Will Viz’s partnership with Sentai finally pull some of those home video releases out of the vault? Will the next live-action anime remake every get filmed? How about that Final Fantasy 16 announcement? That’s anime, right? Right? Plus way more news and recommendations.

Yoshihisa Hirano is the composer, arranger, conductor, and lyricist behind the wonderfully eclectic music of Hunter x Hunter, the unforgettably thrilling symphonies of Death Note, the inventive new sound of the Hajime no Ippo sequels, the elegantly Brandenburg-evoking concertos of Ouran, and many other anime soundtracks. When not scoring background music, he has collaborated with Mikiya Katakura to arrange theme songs of the Maria-sama ga Miteru series and various ALI PROJECT works, blending dissonant and atonal elements with modern pop music to craft a unique sonic experience. Anime only accounts for a fraction of his career that showcases influences from all eras of art music and modern film scores alike, along with his own signature touches. His early appreciation of classical music soon inspired him to teach himself composition, pursue it academically in America, and teach himself English in the process so he could learn as much as possible. The doldrums are here, and boy are we feeling them. Kestrel, Kate, and DJ sort through the last few weeks of anime news. We contemplate mergers and acquisitions, the changing media landscape, and Kate tries to sell DJ an over-the-air antenna. Then Kestrel and Dj give an update on the summer anime season before we dive into recommendations. Pay attention DJ!

DJ and Kestrel convene to lay out their thoughts on a summer season of anime. A season which is looking very different now than what we thought it was going to look like at the beginning of the year. With many series scheduled for spring pushed back into summer it’s now more of a Sprummer? Springer? Re: Zero, OreGairu, Fruits Basket, Rent a Girlfriend, God of High School, and the worst anime of the year? Plus news and recommendations! 

“Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is the greatest anime of all time.” - Kestrel Swift Cain, Kate, and Skyler will be the judge of that. If you have seen the series or have not, Kestrel is going to tell you why you should watch it again and again. We keep the first half spoiler-free for the new anime fans because there’s a new anime fan born every day and everyone has to start somewhere!

Summer convention season is a bust, or is it? Kate and Kestrel run down the news and announcements from AX lite, Funicon, and Aniplex’s.... whatever. Is it really a convention if nobody is convening? Is it really an exposition with no bill of goods? Kestrel watched an awful lot of the panels and breaks down what worked, what didn’t, and the conundrum that is the business hierarchy. At least the manga and light novel publishers bring the announcements, if you enjoy isekai that is. Then we have some recommendations!

The spring 2020 anime season limps over the finish line. With summer anime being a big, giant question mark right now we go over all the shows which just wrapped-up. Kaguya-sama, Sing Yesterday for Me, Tower of God, LISTENERS, there was a little something for everyone here. What came out on top, which failed to live up to expectations? After a soul-crushing two weeks, we return for an episode of mostly news. We say a few belated words on the passing of ANN co-creator Zac Bertschy. We talk about the change of studio for the final season of Attack on Titan. Then the talk lightens as we discuss anime merchandise tie ins, the more ridiculous the better. Are you pro or nah Char-dines? Even in these dark times we can’t stay mired in dismay forever. Cabin fever and delayed shipping aside... we have some recommendations for you. This week we have a short-cast where Kate, DJ, and an increasingly disappointed Kestrel discuss how everything is canceled, likely canceled, or postponed until further notice. Fandom Post is a mostly work-at-home operation so at least we have that working for us. After the news, we dive into the video game industry for a bit to talk about the specs for the next-generation systems, DJ’s porn game, Nioh 2, and how to stay sane during an epidemic. 

It’s a sleepy week in anime land. Conventions are being canceled right and left as a pandemic sweeps the globe. At least we have anime to keep us sane in the middle of this outbreak. We have news to share about Netflix and Crunchyroll funded shows. We talk about some newer releases and the ongoing anime season. We look ahead a bit to touch upon the bigger shows coming out next season and later this year. DJ plugs his eroge, Kate googles on air, and Kestrel is very disappointed in both of us.

Well, it’s awards season, again.  Join us as the usual crew discusses a tiny bit of Academy Awards talk before moving on to the main course, the Crunchyroll Anime Awards! We ponder the problems with genre categories, mixed seasons, the dangers of nominating unfinished series, and what constitutes Best Girl and Best Boy. Did your favorite shows win this year?
