  • PanAm Podcast: Jeff Sessions' Pledge to Target Legal Marijuana Draws Ire of Libertarians

    08/01/2018 Duración: 15min

This week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions repealed the Cole Memo, which had previously directed the Justice Department not to use federal resources to target states that had passed recreational or medicinal marijuana legislation. On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to continue the policy of the Obama administration on the issue, and expressed hesitance to interfere with the states that have passed individual legislation that contradicts federal marijuana prohibition. Now, a bipartisan backlash has some commentators suggesting that a federal law legalizing marijuana may be at hand. And there is hope: House Resolution 1227, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act, would remove marijuana as a Schedule I drug, and end federal prosecution in states that have legalized marijuana. It appears that a new libertarian sentiment, in both parties, is going to provide plenty of pushback for Attorney General Sessions.

  • PanAm Podcast: With Venezuela on the Ropes, Maduro Reaches Out to Russia, China

    29/12/2017 Duración: 18min

As Venezuela staggers under the weight of hyperinflation, rampant economic mismanagement, and shortages of food and medicine, Nicolas Maduro is increasingly relying on allies Russia and China to prop up his hapless regime. Now widely considered a pariah by its Latin American neighbors, the ruling socialist party has negotiated a generous restructuring on a large Russian debt, and turned over a nearly 50% stake in Citgo to Russian oil giant Rosneft, in exchange for another $1.5 billion lifeline. China, meanwhile, continues to play a longterm high stakes game as it seeks to collect on its extensive loans to Venezuela in exchange for future oil deliveries. Ultimately, the only thing that may drive Maduro from power may be a concerted coordinated effort by Venezuela's creditors to seize oil shipments in order to repay debts, in the highly likely event that Venezuela is unable to meet its future debt obligations. Venezuela has under $10 billion in currency reserves, but owes nearly $200 billion to creditors.

  • Colombia: New Poll Suggests Center-Right Center-Left Matchup in 2018 Presidential Elections

    13/12/2017 Duración: 19min

This week pollster Invamer released its third in a series of comprehensive polls on the state of Colombian politics. Former Medellin mayor Sergio Fajardo appears well-positioned to reach a second round election, and wins a hypothetical second round matchup against all other candidates. He has recently strengthened his support at the head of a center-left coalition, and counts with the backing of Claudia Lopez and Jorge Robledo. Meanwhile, the Centro Democratico party of Alvaro Uribe nominated Ivan Duque as its candidate this weekend, setting up a showdown between Duque and independent Conservative Marta Lucia Ramirez to head a center-right coalition. The poll was not good news for former vice president German Vargas Lleras, who continues to slide, and now finds himself in third place, with 72% of Colombians saying that Colombia is headed on the wrong track, and 64% disapproving of the job Juan Manuel Santos is doing as president. Gustavo Petro is in second place in the survey at 14%, but it is widely believe

  • PanAm Podcast: Supreme Court Upholds Trump's Travel Ban in Interest of National Security

    08/12/2017 Duración: 16min

President Trump scored a major victory this week, as the Supreme Court upheld his September 24 travel ban, in a 7-2 ruling. Yet, this is not a final ruling, as several appeals are currently working their way through the federal courts, specifically in the 4th and 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. While immigration law clearly gives the president the authority to impose travel bans if it is in the interest of the United States, the ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights argue that it is in fact a religiously discriminatory "Muslim ban." However, the ban only affects 6 Muslim-majority countries, which constitute less than 10% of the world's 1.6 billion Muslim population. It is likely that the Supreme Court will make a final decision in their current term, which ends in June 2018, but based on this recent decision, it appears likely that Trump's travel ban will pass Constitutional muster. • PanAm Podcast: The Deep State and its Planned Coup D'etat

    07/12/2017 Duración: 16min

This week, substantial evidence has come to light indicating that key players in the Obama administration, including his national security team and the FBI, have been involved in planning to actively undermine and sabotage Donald Trump as presidential candidate, president elect, and president. CIA director John O. Brennan, FBI director James Comey, and their deputies, have been repeatedly revealed as partisan operatives who went light on Hillary Clinton, while aggressively pursuing Trump and associates. House Intelligence Committee head Devin Nunes will now be pursuing contempt of Congress charges against the FBI for failing to provide information about top agent Peter Strzok, who has been intimately involved in the FBI's most sensitive investigations. He is credited with changing language during the Clinton email investigation from "grossly negligent" to "extremely careless", likely sparing Clinton from criminal prosecution. Top Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, meanwhile, has written emails praising acti

  • PanAm Podcast: The Dangers of Ron Paul's Hyper Non-Interventionism

    30/11/2017 Duración: 18min

Ron Paul has been one of a few voices of sanity in our foreign policy in the post 9/11 age. He has long derided our nation-building efforts in the Middle East, and demonstrated how the "War on Terror" has become yet another excuse to expand the size and scope of government, while threatening our civil liberties. But the iconic libertarian's flirtation with non-interventionism can be taken too far as well; particularly when he questions the use of force on the part of our government and military in justifiable situations. Paul recently called into question the Trump administration's policy towards North Korea, and questioned our use of drones to take out dangerous terrorists like American-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. While fundamentally Paul is correct that our military is too big and its presence too widespread, he is also wrong to suggest that force should not be used when dealing with a brutal megalomaniac such as Kim Jong-Un.
