In this episode, Ladey Adey and the book academy are joined by Diane Hull. Diane is a retired Primary School Teacher, living in Todmorden on the Lancashire / Yorkshire border. After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a B A (Hons) Early Childhood Studies First Class, lead to 30 years in education.Diane worked as a Nursery teacher and Foundation Stage Leader until her retirement. It is wonderful to meet Angela Garry who is an author in her own right and as a biographer of Helene Hanff. The Book Academy members had read 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and although Helene is not with us any longer were delighted to find Angela had set up a facebook group dedicated to Helene and is in the process of writing her biography. This was the first book to be reviewed by The Book Academy Angela became interested in Helene Hanff’s writing when she was university and joined the Cinema Society. One of the films shown was 84, Charing Cross Road which had been released the year before, This was back in 1988, and Angela says, “I loved the film and at the end of the film, I sat and watched the credits as you do, to realise it was based on the book by her Helene Hanff, she's was real person. And I rushed out and bought the book. This book was coupled with the book of the Duchess of Bloomsbury Street in one small volume. The latter is Helene’s diary of traveling to London, on the str

I find the choice between which I prefer book or film so difficult (so I'm glad I don't really have to make a choice!) Sometimes I'd just love to curl up under a blanket by a fire and read a good book or even read a book in the bath and there's other times and I just want to get out and watch the film.Recently, we were watching the Oscars and had seen the BAFTAs before then. And I was really taken by the writer/director of Jojo Rabbit and as he took his award, he thanked his mum. But actually he was saying thank you because of the writer. Thank you because he won the best adapted screenplay and what he said and he being Taika Waititas.What was really great is not only did he thanked his mom, he thanked his mom for giving him the book and he said if he hadn't read the book and the book, was based on Caging Skies by Christine Leunan.And it was just wonderful because it made me think, yeah, without the book you couldn't have the film. 2020 could be the Year of Your Book.Is your book on the table or under the Table?When your book is ‘underneath the table’ it  means your book is still an idea. It's not quite there yet. It's not into fruition. You might have certain doubts:·       Is it good enough? ·       Will people really want to read it? ·       Plus other doubts and all the things that just keep attacking us and stop that creativity. Or it just might be the, well, I'm going to do it one day, but actually I'm too busy at the moment or this is happening and that's happening and therefore I'm going to postpone it. For me, that's a bit of a danger zone because while it is under the table, you can't see it and it can't develop. It can't grow because the thing about a book is when you start writing it, it takes on its own life and things that you never imagined that you would talk about and communicate through that
