    Consultant psychiatrist Dr Johannes Cronje of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust describes ‘Selling the sizzle not the sausage’ – a different approach to recruitment. Their traditional method of placing ads in a national journal was expensive and not having the desired impact.  They worked with The Guardian on sponsored editorials, using testimonials from staff and supporting with a range of promoted posts on social media. A key feature was video interviews by Deputy Medical Director Dr Arun Chidambaram with consultant colleagues about working at Mersey Care.     NHS England Lead Campaign Manager Ian Hampton describes the biggest highlight of his career – leading on the creation and delivery of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign.

He tells how the NHS’s first recruitment campaign for over a decade was delivered at break-neck speed and how retaining a focus on specific audiences directed the creative development. It was important to retain an impartial and evidence-based focus in a complex political environment, to deliver real results.  Ian was speaking at the Innovation Agency’s EngageWell event in May 2019\.     Mike Baker talks about a spin-off of the ‘We are the NHS’ campaign which had a big impact on recruitment, particularly of nurses. Mike, Associate Director of Communications at Wirral University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, delivered an intensive two-week campaign across different social media campaigns using the slogan We are ‘WUTH’. It resulted in a 168 per cent increase in completed applications for band 5 nursing posts compared with the previous two weeks.  Mike was speaking at the Innovation Agency’s EngageWell event in May 2019.
