Bible In The News

Over the last week Israel has been subject to barrages of rockets, fired at its civilian centres from the terrorists in the Gaza strip. The rockets are more and more powerful, reaching larger population centres such as Ashkelon and Beersheba and putting key infrastructure in danger. Schools are having to be closed. Israel has responded with targeted missile attacks and utilized its advanced "Iron Dome" anti-missle system. Israel is in a difficult position, her civilian centres are in danger and the populations are being terrorized, yet entering the Gaza strip is not a desirable option. It is a hornet's nest of terrorists, shielding themselves amongst the civilian population. There have also been attempted terrorist attacks within Israel. On the 15th a mother and her daughter were ambushed on the way home to Bethel, but thankfully they were saved when another car arrived behind them. The Iranian nuclear threat also rumbles on, with options and time running out. Ynet news reports that the US Navy is doubling it

This is Paul Billington bringing you another edition of the Bible in the News, having recently visited two exhibitions in Israel which powerfully reminded us of the events in 1961 when Adolf Eichmann -- a chief architect of the Nazi Holocaust -- was captured by Israeli agents in Argentina, and brought to Israel for trial.

This week an opinion piece on the Ynet news website entitled "Revenge of the seculars", highlighted once again the religious, secular tensions that exist in Israel. The article subhead says, "Haredi radicalization prompting secular response, as Israel's moment of truth nears." Haredi Jews are commonly known as "ultra-orthodox" and have a very rapidly growing population in Israel and elsewhere. The piece begins by suggesting that, "The past year has been characterized by unremitting instances of religious radicalization across Israel." Some of the big issues are the fact that many Haredi Jews don't serve in the army and other issues such as the use of buses on the Sabbath. As the various religious segments of Israeli society experience rapid growth, the secular segments have low western level birth rates. As time goes on Israel is rapidly becoming a more and more religious nation, if time goes on the religious segments will dominate simply by sheer numbers. The wall is what remains here of the massive platform built by Herod, and upon which once stood the temple. In the time of Jesus it was an amazing sight, so much so that one of his disciples pointed it out to Jesus saying (Mark 13:1) "Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!"

The attempt by western powers and the Arab League to topple the Syrian regime has Russia threatening to veto any vote at the Security Council level in order to protect its interests in the Middle East. Iran is also causing consternation and raising temperatures in the Middle East, drawing the Biblically designated allies closer together.

As the world prepares for International Holocaust Day, we see antisemitism on the rise and another reminder of how Bible prophecy has been fulfilled - with evidence for mass graves being discovered near a Nazi death camp in Poland. One of the main roads in the Arab city of Jericho is to be named after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Ynet news reported quoting Russian news agencies. Welcome to Bible in the News for January 20, 2012. Medvedev visited Jericho in January 2011 and now Abbas is currently visiting Russia. He is expected to receive an award from Patriarch Alexy II. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in the largest church in Russia.

Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News. This is Paul Billington commenting on the news this week from a Bible point of view. In case you missed it - it was reported last week that the United States is sending "thousands" of troops to Israel. This is at the time when tension is mounting in the region, involving Iran (and her nuclear ambitions), Israel and Saudi Arabia as well as other nations in the Gulf.

The threat, of an Iranian nuclear weapon, together with the regime’s stated desire for “a world without Zionism” and to “wipe Israel off the map”, has worried Israel and the West for many years. People are beginning to realize the German strings tied to economic assistance, are being braided together to form a noose around the neck of Europe nations. While Germany attaches the strings, the true puppet master is the Vatican.

A headline in Britain's "Daily Telegraph" on Friday read: "Death of a currency as eurogeddon approaches." "It's time to think what hitherto markets have regarded as unthinkable - that the euro really is on its last legs."

The current situation in the Middle East is a tense and fascinating one. Momentous changes are taking place. The situation in regards to Iran's nuclear program could explode at any moment. This week the National Post newspaper in Canada reported that the Vatican had issued an official paper entitled, "Note on Financial Reform from the Pontifical Council for Justice & Peace". The article elaborated: "The Vatican called on Monday for the establishment of a “global public authority” and a "central world bank" to rule over financial institutions that have become outdated and often ineffective in dealing fairly with crises."
