For our first podcast of the year we felt it was appropriate to hear from two of the younger men in our Combine Community. This week we welcome Fort Greene Brooklyn's own, Malik and Julian Bunton. Two positive young men born and raised in the borough and dealing with life post-COVID. We discuss, growing up in Bklyn, HBCUs, careers, dating, and life in general. We are the Brooklyn Combine, a non-profit community organization. This week the Combine discusses gang culture and its relationship to popular culture and entertainment. This hyper-capitalist machine called America, seamlessly works in conjunction with the entertainment industry to make street/gang culture look like a viable option for young black men globally. Yet when these young men get caught up in the legal system (or worse), they often find themselves blindsided facing a legal system that is designed for mass incarceration. This week we sat down with some old friends. Jeremy Yaches and Jeremiah Zagar are talented filmmakers/storytellers. This week the Bklyn Combine met with an amazing group of men responsible for an important documentary that premieres on HBO this Wednesday, August 12, 2020. The film is entitled, Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn, and tells the story of a black teenager who was murdered in 1989 by a group of young white men in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. This week we sit down again with Bklyn Combine sister, PNC, disruptor, principal, and author, Dr. Nadia Lopez to get some perspective on what it feels like 10 years after opening a school in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Dr. Lopez started Mott Hall Bridges Academy middle school in 2010 and has since done everything from a TED Talk about starting a school to close a prison, to creating a hair festival at her school in an effort to address issues of self esteem. We had the pleasure of interviewing Emmy Yatich, Nairobi-native and colleague of Combine family member, Jungwon Kim. They both work with the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-governmental organization based in New York City and Amsterdam, with offices throughout the world and operations in more than 60 countries. Its main work is the provision of an environmental certification on sustainable forestry and agriculture and tourism. Emmy Yatich is Communication Associate and works with the Empowering Rural Communities with Renewable Energy (ERCHRE) project funded by IKEA foundation and implemented by Rainforest Alliance an international, non-governmental organization working at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests to make responsible business the new normal. In this week's episode we discuss the prospect of war and many of the conditions that make it a not-so-appealing option for people of color. Way too many young, black men all over this country choose the military over almost any other option based on access and exposure. We get into some dialogue about conflict and the untimely loss of our beloved brother and Brooklyn Mayor, George T. Harris. A street wear expert, chess instructor, and youth advocate, among a host of other specialties; George was a pillar in our community and an encouraging ray of light for all who he came in contact with.
