  • E-137 Everything's decided by who shows up ft Justin McElroy

    06/06/2018 Duración: 01h03min

Live Show: We're doing a live show on Monday, June 11 at 7pm (doors at 6) at The Emerald (555 Gore). RSVP on Facebook or Eventbrite In a surprising result, Ken Sim won the NPA mayoral nomination defeating sitting Park Board Commissioner John Coupar and populist Glen Chernen. We break down who Sim is, what this means for the NPA and where Chernen may end up. Then we discuss a mixer held by the Bremner team on the day after and try to read the tea leaves about who was there and what it means. On the progressive side, the VDLC has reached agreements with the various parties and it's somewhat of a mess. We try to sort out what happened and why pretty much everyone is disappointed (which might mean it's a good compromise). Justin McElroy (@j_mcelroy), CBC's municipal affairs reporter, joins us. Find Justin at justinmcelroy.com Note: Apologies for the short bits of electronic noise in the first few minutes of the podcast. We're planning to upgrade our mics in the near future (or at least properly shield them).

Then we have an interview with Hector Bremner and discuss the possibly YesVancouver slate he's pulling together. Finally, we speak to some Vancouveratta about Stanley Park. Glen Chernen (and Ken Sim), if you're listening, we'd still love to talk to you. And mark June 11 in your calendar's as we're planning to host a live show that evening. • E-152: The last 3 grasping for the steering wheel of the NPA jalopy ft Jennifer Bradshaw

    22/05/2018 Duración: 01h17min

Ken Sim, John Coupar and Glen Chernen are the final three vying for the NPA mayoral nomination but who are these men who would be mayor? It turn out it can be a bit hard to find out! We look at a new video from Ken Sim, Ian spoke with John Coupar and we try to figure out what's up with Glen Chernen. But first, we speak with data analyst, political scientist and pro-housing activist Jennifer Bradshaw about her hopes for the Vancouver municipal election. Follow Jennifer @amoraexcyna Finally, we follow up with the latest from Hector Bremner, the VDLC negotiations and end with some Vancouverrata about Japantown. As always, keep telling your friends about us and leave a review on Apple Podcasts. We loved FO's review that said we're better than the last Star Trek movie.

  • E-160 Twirling toward freedom ft Stephanie Allen

    14/05/2018 Duración: 01h27min

Non-profit developer and Hogan's Alley advocate Stephanie Allen (@builtjustice) joins the podcast to talk about her work, Hogan's Alley and racial justice in Vancouver housing. Then we get into the ongoing pickle that is the NPA mayoral race as the #SupplyBros and Gregory Baker continue to get into public fights over Hector Bremner's declined mayoral bid. Plus we spend some time on how racist the NPA is and who little Jenna might be. We then talk about the state of the progressive race (prior to any rumours we may have leaked last night about Vision kiboshing talks with the other parties) and include an interview Matthew did with Shauna Sylvester (apologies for the background noise). Finally, we introduce a new segment: Vancouverrata, where we bring in a historical and less political fact from Vancouver's history. Today's story comes from Stephanie about Vie's Chicken & Steaks. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_khoX5h2FkQ Also: Our mistake, there were 4 women on the NPA board and 2 re

  • Emergency Pod: Vision walks from VDLC

    13/05/2018 Duración: 03min

Right after finishing recording our next episode we heard a rumour that Vision Vancouver has walked away from Vancouver District & Labour Council talks with COPE, OneCity, Greens and Team Jean. We wanted to get this out right away as this is shocking news that suggests a very divided field going into this fall's municipal election. We'll have a full episode (recorded before this news) that we recorded with Stephanie Allen tomorrow (May 14).

  • Emergency Pod: Kennedy Stewart announces mayoral run

    10/05/2018 Duración: 28min

Burnaby South NDP MP Kennedy Stewart announced this afternoon that he'll be resigning as a Member of Parliament and is launching an independent bid for Mayor of Vancouver. Stewart is hoping progressive parties will line up behind him and support his bid. Ian and Matthew were there at his press conference to record his introductory remarks and ask a few questions. Ian then spoke with ResearchCo pollster Mario Canseco about the state of the increasingly fractured Vancouver mayoral race and a couple of his latest releases. We realize this is our third episode in a week and we really don't plan to be doing this so frequently. If this is too much content coming at you (or not enough?) let us know. Get at us on Twitter @cambiereport or email us cambiereport@gmail.com

  • Emergency Pod: NPA board spikes Hector Bremner

    09/05/2018 Duración: 28min

Hector Bremner announced today that the NPA board had rejected his bid to run for mayor, despite the green light committee recommending he be approved. Ian spoke with Hector by Skype and then calls in Patrick for reactions. This is an ongoing story, so expect more soon.

  • E-166 Green lights at the Crossroads

    08/05/2018 Duración: 01h03min

Vancouver's progressive parties jockeyed in advance of the Vancouver District & Labour Council's meetings to try to reach a unity consensus. Ian reports from Jean Swanson's The City We Need platform launch and Patrick reports from the Crossroads conference where he spoke with mayoral hopefuls Shauna Sylvester and Kennedy Stewart. Then we take a preliminary crack at the state of the NPA race - hours before the entire thing fell apart. Nevertheless we presciently discussed what the possible ramifications of a premature end to Hector Bremner's NPA mayoral bid might be. Finally, we touch on the School Tax revolt, changes to the city's liquor laws, some local podcast recommendations (SOLD! and Metro Conversations) and how you can work on the Vancouver election. Please rate and review us, Follow us on Twitter (@cambiereport), tell a friend and look forward to another episode within the week (given the pace of #vanpoli this week).

  • E-179 Jen St Denis and the NPA's really bad week

    25/04/2018 Duración: 01h07min

Ian Bushfield and Patrick Meehan are joined by StarMetro's Jen St Denis (@jenstden) to catch up on the latest news in Vancouver politics. First, we look at the conflict of interest claims filed against NPA councillor Hector Bremner and how the party says it won't not use a loophole in municipal campaign finance laws. Then we go into the latest independents to come forward for the "progressive" side and how close Adriane Carr is to announcing her own bid for mayor. Finally, we touch on some electoral mechanics changes including randomized ballots, a request to the province to let permanent residents vote and a weird story about a Facebook poll that purports to tell you who your ideal mayoral candidate would be. As always, please keep telling your friends about us, share our episodes on social media, leave a review where you found us and send any feedback to us at cambiereport@gmail.com
