Cristela Alonzo's Hello, Es NASA
30/06/2022 Duración: 01h26minThis week, host Jesse David Fox welcomes comedian, actor, writer, and producer Cristela Alonzo! Creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, Alonzo was the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy. Her debut Netflix special Lower Classy was released in 2017, and now Cristela's back with her second: Middle Classy. Instead of choosing a joke from her aforementioned new special, Cristela decided to go with something a little more symbolic of her life and career as a stand up: Hello, Es NASA. Not only is it the first joke she ever wrote about her family, but it's one of her first big jokes, period. From Conan to Last Comic Standing, to getting feedback that directly led to jokes written for Middle Classy, this joke and interview are a case study for Cristela Alonzo's success. How The Right Makes Comedy Work For Them
12/05/2022 Duración: 01h51minI know we say this a lot, but this week, host Jesse David Fox is bringing something a little different to the Good One feed: Instead of a comedian talking about a bit they wrote and love that explains what they're trying to do with their comedy, he brought two academics into the (digital) studio! Meet Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx, authors of the new book That's Not Funny: How The Right Makes Comedy Work For Them. The book is a call to pay attention to the emergence of right-wing comedy and the political power of humor. That's Not Funny argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx take readers––particularly self-described liberals––on a tour of contemporary conservative comedy and the "right-wing comedy complex." Together, Matt and Nick walk Jesse through every section of the book, and discuss everything from Jesse Watters's branding as the "conservative John Stewart", to Joe Rogan's hold on pop culture, to t

Taylor Tomlinson's Virginity (Rerun)
03/03/2022 Duración: 01h08minOn this week’s episode, standup comedian wunderkind Taylor Tomlinson (Self-Helpless podcast) talks about becoming one of the youngest comics ever to have their own Netflix one-hour stand-up special. Her path to taping her hilarious Quarter-Life Crisis at the age of 25 is an extremely nontraditional one: she started as a teenage Christian comedian, after taking a stand-up class with her father. This meant to fully become the comedian she wanted to be, she had to distance herself from her church and her dad. As a result of her religious upbringing, Taylor lost her virginity after she had already become an established comedian. The joke she discusses this episode mines the absolute absurdity of that for comedy, while slyly touching on more serious issues of consent. All building to a perfect classic movie reference!
