  • A Herzog Appreciation

    29/03/2021 Duración: 01h22min

(Midway Gamblers, Calgary, 2019 ©Ward Rosin)   I'm joined by Ward Rosin on this episode as we dive into Fred Herzog's "Modern Color" book. Not a review, per se, but more of an appreciation. Herzog is one of those "colorist" street photographers from the late 50s and 60s, photographing mainly in the city of Vancouver, Canada. Ward and I skim through some of the more thought provoking images in the book as well as discuss the controversy of a 2012 interview with Herzog. Also, stay tuned until the end where I make a much anticipated announcement.   Show Links: The Estate of Fred Herzog     Saul Leiter Ernst Haas Walker Evans Eugène Atget Bart Busschots Ward Rosin's Website, Instagram feed and Facebook page. • Dispatches from Green-Wood 11

    16/03/2021 Duración: 31min

After a rather long enforced absence due to Covid 19 AND joblessness, I'm back with a rambling walk in my favorite outdoor podcasting location, Green-Wood. Also, I'm making an announcement about an announcement, if that makes any sense.

  • Lens Hangover

    15/01/2021 Duración: 01h29min

For this first show of 2021, I have the pleasure of chatting with my buddy Ward Rosin again. This episode we're going on about my lens-buying binge during the past ten months and just lenses in general. Also, Ward tells us about his new lens "lemonade" stand. It's a bit of a long show and you'll prove your fandom if you listen to the whole thing. So grab your beverage of choice...   Show Links: Ward Rosin's Website, Instagram feed and Facebook page. • "Computer, Enhance!" A Chat with Bryan Minear

    31/12/2020 Duración: 01h21min

(image courtesy of ©Bryan Minear)   This last episode of 2020 (and my 3rd of December!) I chat with my friend Bryan Minear about processing. I was inspired to talk with Bryan after he posted a video he made of himself processing images in Capture One. I wanted to discuss this question that popped into my head: Has processing given us a solution for a problem that wasn’t there? While we don't fully answer this, I believe this is a beginning of a longer discussion about processing our photographs using apps like Capture One and the new artificial intelligence features of apps like Photoshop and Luminar AI. Processing is integral for many photographers (Bryan and myself included) whose visual voice is completed when they take their images into the digital darkroom, but is it possible to lose control over our creativity?   Show Links: Bryan Minear: Website & Twitter Bryan's Video Luminar AI Photoshop AI features

  • Dispatches from Green-Wood 10

    14/12/2020 Duración: 01h03min

Another jaunt to Green-Wood because it's one of the places I can gather my thoughts. This time I'm talking a little bit about my new lens and a lot bit about what it takes to judge a photo competition. Also, my thoughts (and a suggestion) about self critique.   Show links: Sean Tucker's video "How to get Good Feedback on your Photography (Reviews, Mentors and Travel Companions)" See more photos here: http://streetshots.photography/2020/12/14/street-shots-podcast-ep-128-dispatched-from-green-wood-10-judge/

  • Dispatches from Green-Wood 9

    30/11/2020 Duración: 33min

Yet another Dispatch from Green-Wood. What's new? During this walk I post a small challenge to myself and the rest of you. Also chat a little about my foray into bird photography. You can view more images here: http://streetshots.photography/2020/12/01/street-shots-podcast-ep-127-dispatches-from-green-wood-no-9-whats-new/   Some of the hawks I photographed:   Basquiat's grave marker:

  • Dispatches from Green-Wood 8

    01/11/2020 Duración: 45min

Another walk and talk through Green-Wood Cemetery today. This time I'm talking mostly about my addiction to buying lenses during the pandemic and I dive into a couple old stories. It's what I do. :-) Look for the photos I mention in the show here:    ----more---- Photos taken with my old Nikkor 500mm lens at an airbase in Holland         ----------------------   First shot I took with new Viltrox 56mm f/1.4     Images taken with new Viltrox AF56mm f/1.4             Shots with new Fuji XF 100-400mm               Some street shots taken with my new Fuji X-100F

  • Dispatches from Green-Wood, No. 7

    18/08/2020 Duración: 35min

Well, I think I've done enough shows from Green-Wood Cemetery to now officially name these segments "Dispatches from Green-Wood." This is dispatch number seven (who knows if I've done six previous ones). So, these are my thoughts about pinhole lenses and how I try to keep my foot in the photography world every day.  Show Links: Brooks Jenson Lenswork   Images shot with Thingyfy Pinhole Lenses

  • Chat with Dan Bailey

    24/07/2020 Duración: 01h24min

This episode I had the great honor of speaking with adventure photographer Dan Bailey. Lately I've been binging his YouTube videos and after I saw enough I realized I needed to talk to this guy. His photography is incredibly compelling and his desire to share his knowledge (through workshops, books and his videos) and inspiring outlook on life is equally so. I had a great time talking to Dan and expect him back on the show sometime in the near future.    Links:   Dan Bailey Photography Dan's You Tube X Series Unlimited eBook     Dan's photos:

  • For The Trees

    16/07/2020 Duración: 45min

Things have quieted down a little allowing me some mental space to record a new episode. This show I'm talking about how our relationship with equipment, lenses, apps are quite symbiotic when it comes to sharing our vision with the world. Does the equipment drive us to see the world differently or does it make what we see clearer? Good question, I think.

  • Kids and Chairs

    16/06/2020 Duración: 35min

Been a while since the last show and I'm taking a walk around Green-Wood again to explain what's going on. Also, a bit of a special treat as some great fourth graders were tasked with writing (very) short stories about a couple of my images, included below. A wonderful treat to have one's images the subject of budding imaginations. So wonderful.

  • Book Day

    16/05/2020 Duración: 01h19min

I've got my buddy Ward Rosin on the show again. We're catching up on what we're doing during lockdown, including going through our back catalog of images and books we're recommending.    This episode's links: Masters of Street Photography The Phone Book Long Story Short Full Moon Mexico: Between Life and Death Ward Rosin's Website, Instagram feed and Facebook page.

  • Cooped Up

    17/04/2020 Duración: 27min

Like you, I'm cooped up at home with not much to do. Been working at my remote job and that's been keeping me busy. Busy enough to delay publishing this episode. Well, here it is. I hope I can keep you company for a short while.   Sample Gigapixel AI image: original original on left, upsampled on right   original on left, upsampled on right   Upsampled final (downsampled for post)   Links: Topax Gigipixel

  • Dispatches from Green-Wood

    17/03/2020 Duración: 58min

Well, we've officially entered the Twilight Zone. Because of this, I needed to clear my head a little so I decided to do the show during one of my photo strolls through Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. I'm going to be working on my own YouTube channel and in this episode I share what I have planned. Also, just some of my personal thoughts about the current world situation.   Links: ShutterTime Podcast

  • Shiny Stuff and Lartigue

    29/02/2020 Duración: 01h23min

Another busy freelance week means I'm rebroadcasting a show from last April, with me and Ward Rosin doing a deep dive on Jacques-Henri Lartigue. Also, a quick update on some future plans and shiny objects that are distracting me.    Bryan Minear's X-T4 Preview   Here are the notes from Episode 96 regarding Lartigue:   In this episode, I'm joined by my buddy Ward Rosin and we do a deep dive into the photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue.  Ward and I touch on many aspects of Lartigue's work including his love of speed and his use of one of the first color photography processes called "Autochrome." We make some interesting discoveries during our chat and I'm sure you will too as you listen to us both talk about a photographer we've admired for a long time. This is the first of what will be a regular feature on Street Shots. The idea of talking about interesting and exceptional photographers with a buddy has been something I've wanted to do on the show for a while now. Any feedback is appreciated.  Show Links: W

  • What the Camera Saw

    15/02/2020 Duración: 01h05min

This episode started as a riff on the title but evolves (or devolves) into just a chat about photography. Does the camera see more than we do when we are shooting? The camera: does it work for us or do we work for it? My buddy Ward joins me in hashing out some of these questions.   Here are some shots of our bookshelves:       A couple of Ward's shots of steam trains:     Ward Rosin's Website, Instagram feed and Facebook page. • By The Numbers

    31/01/2020 Duración: 56min

Numbers, numbers, numbers. Did you ever notice how many numbers were involved in this thing we call “photography?” Well, I just did. Well, no, not really but an experience with some students got me thinking about all the numbers we have to deal with just to create an image. Also, I eulogize a recent “passing.
