A source involved in the investigation told CNN the fact that the disappearances occurred during times his family was out of town suggests he may have lured victims to the Long Island home. Investigators believe committing the killings at home would have given Heuermann control of the environment and access to materials that were found at the crime scene, including tape and burlap bags, the source said. One of the reasons the search of the suspect’s home has taken so long is because investigators are also combing for trace evidence that may be linked to the victims, multiple sources said. (CNN)

Breaking: State to seek capital case against Stephan Sterns. - The State Attorney’s Office intends to seek the death penalty against Stephan Sterns, the man accused of killing his girlfriend’s daughter, 13-year-old Madeline Soto, according to court records. Sterns is charged with first-degree murder in the case. He is facing one charge of first-degree murder and 60 charges related to sexual battery of a child and possession of sexual material. According to court documents, the State cited four aggravating circumstances that led to their decision: The defendant was previously convicted of another capital felony or of a felony involving the use or threat of violence to the person. The capital felony was committed while the defendant was engaged in the commission of, or an attempt to commit aggravated child abuse. The capital felony was especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel. On November 19, 2000, the body of a woman was discovered by hikers in the Long Island Pine Barrens in Manorville near Halsey Manor Road. The body had been cut into pieces and placed in plastic bags. It was estimated that she had been dead for several weeks before being found. The victim was a white woman, possibly in her 30s, with brown hair. She was referred to as the "Manorville Jane Doe." An Idaho judge on Saturday sentenced a man to death, two days after he was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges in the 2019 killings of his first wife and two of his current wife’s children, capping a case that drew scrutiny because of the couple’s “doomsday” religious beliefs. The decision came after jurors took more than a day to deliberate during the special sentencing proceeding in the case against the man, Chad Daybell, 55, in Ada County District Court in Boise, Idaho. Earlier on Saturday, the jury had recommended the death penalty before the judge ordered a short recess to make a final sentencing decision. As the judge, Steven W. Boyce of the Seventh Judicial District, read his decision, Mr. Daybell sat with his hands in his lap, expressionless at the defense table.
