In this first episode of Potter And Daughter, cartoonist Joel Watson talks to his seven year old daughter, Lily, about the first six chapters in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone. They spend some time on the current state of Harry’s life and how it rapidly begins to change with his introduction to the Wizarding World and his journey from Privett Drive to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft And Wizardry. In the seventh episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily pick up right where the last episode abruptly left off with Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets at chapter 14. Things start calming down around Hogwarts until Riddle’s diary goes missing. A main character gets petrified, and Harry and Ron meet Aragog. Ginny heads down into the chamber and Harry follows her, eventually facing off against the memory of his greatest foe. In the eighth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily tackle the first seven chapters of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban and ask the questions, “Who is Sirius Black, and why does everyone think he’s after Harry?” They also discuss magical pets, new Hogwarts professors (Remus Lupin and… Hagrid?!), and malicious magical creatures like Dementors and Boggarts. In the ninth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily tackle chapters 8-14 of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban and discuss Harry’s very brave and very stupid visits to Hogsmeade Village, new revelations about Sirius Black and his connection to the Potters, Oliver Wood’s Quidditch legacy, and Hermione’s increasing school schedule stresses. In the tenth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily attempt to cover the remainder of book 3,  Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban, but only manage to get through chapters 15-18 in an hour. There’s just too much to talk about in the final riveting act of this book (which happens to be my wife’s and Lily’s mother’s favorite in the series). “Like what?” you ask. Like the Quidditch final between Slytherin and Gryffindor, O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, the fate of Buckbeak, Professor Trelawney’s ever more grim and specific predictions for Harry’s future, Harry’s first (and final?) confrontation with the notorious Sirius Black, unexpected revelations from Professor Lupin (several, actually) and the truth about Order Of Merlin First Class award recipient Peter Pettigrew! In the eleventh episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily’s discuss the dramatic conclusion of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban, covering chapters 19 through 22. Harry’s world is turned upside down by what he’s learned from Sirius and Lupin, Peter Pettigrew’s true allegiance is revealed, Harry seeks justice for his parents but finds the job of executioner harder than it seems, a full moon derails everyone’s plans, Harry nearly receives the kiss of something-worse-than-death, and the secret Hermione has been keeping all year is finally revealed! Joel also takes Lily down the time travel rabbit hole and explains what a problematic plot device it can be in sci-fi and fantasy and why it must be used sparingly. Harry and Hermione attempt to right the wrongs of the previous day while saving two innocent lives and Harry finds a strength within himself he never knew he possessed. In the twelfth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily discuss the the first 9 chapters of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, which deals almost exclusively with the Quidditch World Cup. It’s all nearly all Quidditch, mostly all of the time. At least it is until the Death Eaters show up and cast a dark mark over the festivities. In episode thirteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily tackle chapters 10-18 of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. After the life threatening danger at the Quidditch World Cup, Harry heads to Hogwarts (the place where his life is USUALLY in danger) which is hosting the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry has a mad new professor with some unforgivable lessons, visiting students arrive at by sea and sky, Harry’s ears are burning and so is a goblet when his name comes up in an unexpected place, and Harry finds that his friends are quick to turn away when they suspect him to be a stinker. In episode fourteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily discuss the events of chapters 19-26 of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. Harry is a Tri-Wizard Champion whether he likes it or not, and that means being tasked with… tasks! He faces the first two which see him in a sky high dragon battle and a deep sea mermaid mission. In episode fifteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily cover chapters 27-31 of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. Harry reunites with his godfather, and has several visions courtesy of his Divination Class dreams and Dumbledore’s Pensieve. Armed with more knowledge of Death Eaters past and a few new spells, Harry tackles the 3rd Tri-Wizard Tournament Task, where victory, it seems, may not be his best option. In episode sixteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily wrap up Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire with a discussion of chapters 32-37. Harry is transported to an unexpected place and finally meets his greatest foe face to noseless face. After a final act of love and protection from his parents, Harry returns with what’s left of Cedric to Hogwarts and, together with his professors, he learns who’s really been pulling his strings all year. In episode seventeen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily start out on Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix and cover chapters 1-6. This is the first book in the series that Lily has not read all the way through as of the time of our recording. Harry isn’t being kept in the cupboard any more, but he IS being kept in the dark by everyone that supposedly cares about him. Dudley has a Dementor encounter, Harry gets expelled (again?), but not really (again?), then is kidnapped by allies old and new and taken to The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black to find out what The Order is really all about. In episode eighteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily pick up on Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix at chapter 7 and discuss everything through chapter 12. Harry faces expulsion (AGAIN) and has a trial at the Ministry of Magic. Dumbledore provides aid, but is still distant. Hogwarts has two new Gryffindor Prefects, but not the ones you might think, and we are introduced to the latest in a long line of less than desirable Defense Against The Dark Arts teachers. In episode nineteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily discuss Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix chapters 13-19. Harry begins to see what happens when the paranoid and fearful hand of The Ministry begins to tighten its grip around Hogwarts. Harry has his first of several detentions with Deloris Umbridge and her “enhanced” punishment techniques. Dumbledore is still keeping his distance from Harry, and Hagrid is nowhere to be seen. Hermione advises Harry to take his, and the rest of the students’, educations into his own hands not to keep their grades up, rather to keep them alive in the dark days to come. In episode twenty of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily discuss Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix chapters 20-26. Hagrid gets back from his secret mission and, from the looks of him, things didn’t go as well as he’d hoped. Umbridge sets her “evaluating eye” squarely on Hagrid as Harry shares a moment with Cho. Mr. Weasley is hospitalized after a brutal attack and the kids spend a the holidays at St. Mungo’s. Snape begins training Harry on how to protect his mind, and Hermione concocts a plan to get Harry’s story out to the Wizarding world.
