This episode we speak with Jeff Sahadeo, author of the new book Voices from the Soviet Edge: Southern Migrants in Leningrad and Moscow. Jeff is Associate Professor at the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at Carleton University. He is author of Russian Colonial Society in Tashkent, 1865–1923 and co-editor of Everyday Life in Central Asia. We spoke to Jeff about his research on the Soviet Era migration of people from the Caucasus and Central Asia into Leningrad and Moscow, how the Soviet concept of the “friendship of peoples” worked and didn’t work, and the rewards and challenges Jeff faced basing his book on oral histories.
