The United States moved quickly to recognize him as the country's new leader, enraging incumbent Nicolas Maduro. The American intervention caught many observers off guard, with some pointing out that Donald Trump's rapid endorsement of the self-proclaimed President seemed to go against his "America First" philosophy.
