The recommendations published earlier this year by a special Oireachtas committee urged the Government to legislate for assisted dying in restricted circumstances. However, in a pastoral letter the bishops criticised the recommendations, warning the proposals will “undermine the confidence of terminally ill people” and leave those with intellectual disabilities in a vulnerable position.
